Misc. Notes
Mrs. Annie E. Leisenring, one of Allentown's best known residents, and widow of Captain Thomas B. Leisenring, died on December 5, 1942, in the Sacred Heart hospital following a lengthy illness. She was in her 92nd year.
Mrs. Leisenring, the descendant of several of the city's prominent families, had been actively identified with business, civic and social circles of Allentown over a long period of years. For 55 years she resided at 432 Chew St.
The daughter of Nelson and Elemina, nee Massey, Weiser, she was born at 22 N. 8th St. on Aug. 18, 1851, and was educated in the local schools, the Allentown Academy and the Allentown College for Women.
At the age of 17 she taught school in the old 5th Ward (now the Herbst) building. After marrying Captain Leisenring, who served with Company G. 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers, she took an active part in welfare work and in the auxiliaries connected with the Grand Army of the Republic, of which she was a charter member. She was at one time commander of the Department of Pennsylvania, Ladies of the G. A. R.
For twenty-five years, from 1893 until 1918, Mrs. Leisenring served as factory inspector for this area. For many years she was the only woman inspector in the State.
So competent and thorough was her work that at the time of her retirement, she was the only woman who attained a Class A rating in this service in the State. During her period of service, women factory inspectors were required to inspect cement mills and factories of every type.
Believed to be the oldest in period of membership in St. John's Lutheran church, Mrs. Leisenring taught the Mothers class of the Beginners department of the church school until her eyesight began to fail.
Mrs. Leisenring was a charter member of the Allentown Woman's club and was affiliated with Lady Lincoln Rebekah Lodge, No. 72, I.O.O. F.; Lehigh Valley Child Helping Conference, Herbst Parent-Teacher Assn. and the Senior auxiliary of the Allentown hospital, the Pennsylvania German society, the New England Society of Eastern Pennsylvania and other groups.
Mrs. Leisenring's husband died 55 years ago. Her father was a member of the State Legislature for two terms and was active in Democratic circles. Her grandfather, Martin Weiser, was the famous maker of grandfather clocks and her maternal grandfather, Charles S. Massey, was Allentown's first jeweler.
Surviving are four children: Mrs. Abbie, widow of John S. Correll, of Easton; Louise A. Leisenring, female probation officer of Lehigh county, who resided with her; G. Thomas Leisenring of Allentown, and Peter \V. Leisenring, of Emmaus, both of the Call-Chronicle newspapers.
Three grandchildren, John P. Corrcll and Anna Rebecca Correfl of Easton and Eleanor Leisenring of Emmaus also survive, as does a sister, Mary C. Weiser, who resided with her.
A sister and a brother, Charles N Weiser, prominent in newspaper and Democratic political circles and editor of the Allentown Democrat and Evening Item, preceded her in death.
