In 1968, Alan joined the United Aircraft Research Laboratories which subsequently would be called the United Technologies Research Center. Over the years Alan was employed at U.T.R.C., he was promoted through various positions, eventually becoming an Assistant Director of Research. In the year 2000, Alan became the Director of International Fuel Cells Programs for UTRC. It was during Alan's years at UT that he authored over sixty technical papers, wrote the book Laser Diagnostics for Combustion Temperature and Species that was fully revised and made into a second edition in 1996, and, lectured in courses around the world. In September 2002, Alan retired from United Technologies, after a thirty-four year career, to become the Vice President and Dean at Rensselaer of Hartford -- a graduate school offering Master's degrees for working professionals. Alan retired April 2004. Alan holds six U.S. patents, served on the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, and is a member of the Combustion Institute, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. In 2004 he became the vice president of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering and its president in 2006. Alan is also a Fellow of both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Optical Society of America. In 1985, he was awarded U.T.C.'s highest honor for engineering achievement, the George Mead Medal. Alan has run thirty marathons, including ten Boston Marathons. He is also an avid golfer, alpine skier and cyclist. He has completed two “century” bike rides.
