George Stephenson
George Stephenson is often referred to as the ÒFather of the Steam LocomotiveÓ. Although many worked to evolve the engineering behind steam locomotive, it is a fact that Stephenson had a major role in promoting the use of the locomotive – first at the Wylam and Killingworth collieries in England and then at the Stockton and Darlington Railroad. In William H. BrownÕs, The History of the First Locomotives In America, Chapters 7 - 10 are devoted to the career of George Stephenson.
Robert H. Thurston, in his History Of The Growth Of The Steam-Engine gives a detailed account of StephensonÕs activities beginning with the construction of his first successful engine at the Killingworth colliery in 1814.
