ANTHRACITE
IRON
There is now no doubt of
the entire success of making Iron with Anthracite Coal. In October of 1838 a Furnace was erected and put in
blast at this place, by Messrs. Baughman, Guiteau & Co. for the purpose of
trying the experiment of manufacturing Iron exclusively with Anthracite, and
continued for about three months when they were compelled to blow out in
consequence of some necessary repairs which had to be effected upon the
Company's Improvements, and which required the water to be drawn from the Level
that they obtained their power. The Furnace having been erected under the most
hurrying circumstances by those engaged in‑ the enterprise they were not
able to obtain the necessary fixtures which were calculated to promote the
project of this valuable yet apparently uncertain undertaking. The Ore was of
rather inferior quality, neither washed nor burnt, and for want of covering was
exposed to all the sleet and snow of winter, and in that condition was used,
which, of itself was sufficient to chill almost any Furnace. But contrary to their anticipation at
the time, she worked through all the difficulties until compelled to stop as
above. In July lest they again resumed the enterprise and have continued
successfully, without the least interruption, until the present time.
In conclusion we
congratulate the citizens of this great Commonwealth upon the accomplishment of
this important and lucrative object, and think that too much praise cannot be
awarded to the gentlemen immediately connected with the enterprise, for their
indefatigable exercise and perseverance, which alone have actuated them on in
opposition to the opinion of both friend and foe, for the triumphal result and
happy issue which they have attained, and that too, without any foreign
assistance whatever.
