Jonathan Shoemaker, eldest son of John and Christina Shoemaker, was born March 27, 1796. He was a farmer and tanner by occupation. He had a tannery at East Texas and tannery interests in the state of Indiana, to which place he made trips every two years, either on horseback or by stage, which consumed a period of nine months. He was the owner of two large farms and was a substantial and public-spirited citizen, having donated ground for public school purposes at East Texas and was actively interested in Church and Sunday school work. His homestead is still standing, now occupied by his daughter, Mrs. Stephen Acker. He married Lyida Jarrett Eisenhard, youngest daughter of George Simon Eisenhard. and his wife Catharine Jarrett. Their children were: Mariann; John Simon; Lydia Helen; Enos Jonathan; Charles Henry; Lucus Eisenhard; Elizabeth Christina, who died at the age of eight years; and Lovinia Catharine.
