Misc. Notes
Parents, 7 siblings and 4 children listed.
Mr. Samuel S. Gobin, who for some years has been residing with his son, General J. P. S. Gobin, died this morning at 4:15 o'clock, of heart failure. Deceased had been in failing health since last spring, but was able to be about and passed most of his time in his son's law office reading the papers and receiving visitors during the General's absence. Last Sunday evening he attended services in Zion Lutheran church, as was his custom, and was taken suddenly with illness while on his way home. On Tuesday his case became serious and he grew gradually weaker until this morning, when the spirit left its tenement of clay and the aged father fell peacefully asleep. Samuel S. Gobin was born at Sunbury, this State, August 5, 1812, and was, therefore, aged 81 years. He lived at Sunbury until 1878, when he removed to Lebanon and since that time resided here. He was married to a daughter of Rev. John Peter Shindel, his wife having departed this life a number of years ago. Four children survive, viz., Gen. J. P. S. Gobin and Mrs. L. H. Case, of this city; Mrs. Annie M. Shaw, of Burlington, N.J., and Ed. C. Gobin, Esq., of Rocky Ford, Colorado. Deceased was a wheelwright by occupation, and during part of his lifetime was engaged with his father on the Union and Schuylkill canals, building locks and doing other heavy carpenter work. His later years were spent in ease and contentment, as he was unable to do much work. He was of a very friendly and jovial disposition, fond of meeting his old-time friends and talking with them about events that had transpired long ago. He was an ardent Republican and was always deeply interested in the welfare of the party; had a large acquaintanceship, and remembered men and things through a period of many years. He could, therefore, speak entertainingly to those whom he met, and loved to relate some of his experiences. He was a regular attendant at Zion Lutheran church. The funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon, at 4 o'clock, at the residence of Gen. Gobin, on Cumberland Street. [Lebanon Daily News, August 17, 1893, Page 1]
