Edwin W. Bittner, a prominently known and esteemed resident of Slatedale, died at his home at this place on Monday at 3:30 o'clock, the end coming after a brief illness of influenza. He was in his 74th year. The death of Mr. Bittner comes one month and seventeen days after that of his wife Leanna, nee Rex, Bittner. He was born a son of the late Stephen and Rebecca, nee Wuchter, Bittner. In early life he was engaged in farming, but for fifteen years he had been associated with the Bittner Slate Company, during which time he served as superintendent of the quarries. Thirteen years ago he retired from the slate business. He was a director of the Slatington-Banger Slate syndicate. He was a faithful member of the Lutheran wing of the Trinity Reformed-Lutheran Church, Slatedale, and was afflilated with the Star of North Commandery Newst A. and O. M. of M. Among those left to mourn his passing are the following children: Mrs. Orville Buck, Sellersville R. 3; Mrs. George Kistler and Mrs. Ralph Blose, both of Slatedale; and Mrs. Raymond Kern, at home; together with twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Elemina Williamson, Newside; and three brothers, Phano Bittner, Jordan; James Bittner, New Tripoli; and Henry Bittner, Stone Harbor, N. J. Funeral services will be held at his late home, Slatedale, on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. J. H. Longacre will officiate. Interment will be made in Slatedale Cemetery.

Edwin W. Bittner, son of Stephen, was born in Heidelberg Township, Dec. 15, 1854. He attended the public schools and at the age of twelve years, began to work in his father's mills. During the '73 panic, he labored upon the farm. From 1876-77 he was in the West doing farm work. In 1878 he lived in Philadelphia, and then farmed in Washington Township for his father-in-law, eighteen years. In 1900, he began to operate the Saegersville Slate vein, known as the Bitther quarry and has twenty-five employees. It produces only beg-vein slate. They are 260 feet deep. The output is roofing and blackboard slate. In politics, Mr. Bittner is a Republican, and was for six years an assessor. He is a member of the Knights of Malta and the state grange. He belongs to the Lutheran congregation at Slatedale, was on the building committee which erected the present Union Church, served as a deacon and has been treasurer for many years. He also owns a sixty-eight acre farm in Washington township, which is a part of the Rex homestead on which he erected all the present buildings. In 1909, he built the fine mansion in Slatedale where he resides. In 1878, Mr. Bittner was married to Leanna, daughter of Reuben and Lucy Ann (Peter) Rex. They were blessed with six children: Minnie S. (Mrs. Orville W. Bucks), Laura (Mrs. George E. Kistler), Rosa L. A., Cora R., Sadie V., and Jane M., who departed this life at the age of four years.
