W. Oscar Lichtenwalner, former school teacher in Upper and Lower Macungie townships, and of later years a potato farmer, died Sunday morning at his home, Macungie R. 1, adjoining the Brookside Country club. He was in his 85th year. Mr. Lichtenwalner was born in Upper Macungie township, a son of the late William and Rebecca, nee Schmoyer, Lichtenwalner. After attending the township schools, he attended the Poughkeepsie Business college in New York and later prepared for the teaching profession. He taught for 19 terms in the Upper and Lower Macungie schools, after which he turned to farming, specializing in potatoes. He was one of the first Lehigh county farmers to be a member of the 400 bushel club of Pennsylvania. He was in ill health for the past two years and bedfast for the past 10 days. A member of Grace Lutheran church, Macungie, he was the teacher of the German Bible class of the Sunday school and secretary of the church council for many years. Survivors are a son, William J. Lichtenwalner, Breinigsville; three daughters, Ada G. and Mary M., at home, and Florence, wife of Ellis Lichtenwalner, Macungie R. 1; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. George Titlow, Trexlertown, and Mrs. Annie Faust, Ambler, also survive. His wife, the former Pauline Grammes Lichtenwalner, died 16 months ago. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the late home with the Rev. Jesse Renninger officiating. Interment in Solomon's Union church cemetery, Macungie.
