Started on Friedens-Bote as apprentice in 1823; continued seven years; worked a year for John Howe, Philadelphia; returned to Allentown; then moved to Mauch Chunk for a time; appointed postmaster in Allentown June 9, 1841; bought interest in Patriot in 1845 which he sold again in 1846; in same year established Lehigh Register which he disposed of in 1855; in 1859 acquired interest in Democrat which he sold to son in 1865; in 1860 appointed clerk in office of internal revenue; appointed clerk of Orphan's Court Nov. 20. 1869 and Nov. 7, 1872; represented Democrat at 16th general meeting of Verein der deutschen Presse at Allentown, March 9, 1871; one of organizers and secretary for some years of Lehigh County Agricultural Society; member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church and Allen Lodge No. 71, I.O.O.F.
