Misc. Notes
Death came swiftly on September 19, 1932, to Walter T. Hartzell, one of the best-known residents of Allentown, graduate of Harvard University, who for years was manager of the Welt Bote Publishing Company. He was in his 57th year.
Mr. Hartzell, who was the oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wilson J. Hartzell, was born at the family home, then located at 235 North Ninth Street, but resided most of his years at the homestead his father created at 130 North Ninth Street, now the Owls Home.
All his life a brilliant student, he entered Andover Academy after graduating from Allentown High, and fairly went flying through Harvard. A few years later he graduated from Harvard Law School.
For some years Mr. Hartzell practiced law in New York as junior with a noted firm. A score or more years ago he returned to Allentown as assistant to his father in the conduct of their printing and publishing business at 631 Hamilton Street, the site of a print shop started during the War of 1812. For a time he assisted in the publishing of the Welt Bote and the Frieden Rote, German language newspapers now out of existence. He continued after the death of his father as manager of the job-printing business until his own demise.
A great reader and an enthusiastic lover of the theatre, he accumulated one of the finest private libraries in Allentown. While in New York he wrote theatrical criticisms for both English and German newspapers.
He is survived by his wife Ruth, nee Massaker, and two brothers, Mawxell R. Hartzell, of 1037 Linden Street, Allentown, and Arthur R. Hartzell, assistant chief chemist of the great Roebling works at Roebling, N. J., near Trenton. A brother, Oliver R. Hartzell, preceded him in death.
