Civil War veteran He enlisted on October 4, 1862, as a private in Company K, 151th Pennsylvania Volunteers. His war service was particularly noteworthy. He participated in some of the major engagements of the struggle. The regiment moved to Washington on November 26, 1862, and proceeded to Arlington Heights. The group then went to Union Mills, in enemy country, twenty miles beyond Alexandria, Va. At that point they were opposed by Moseby's guerillas. They were transferred in February to Belle Plain. They subsequently fought at Chancellorsville, and on June 12 marched for Gettysburg. Here they were thrown into the fiercest fighting, and were among the regiments which withstood the severest assaults of the Confederate troops. It went into the fight with 21 officers and 466 men. Of these, 2 officers and 66 men were killed, and 12 officers and 187 men were wounded, while 100 were missing. Comrade Haas was mustered out of service July 30, 1863. He originally was a member of Fuller post, No. 378, of Catasauqua, but when that post was disbanded, he became a member of E.B. Young post, No. 87, G.A.R., of Catasauqua, PA
