Colonel John Siegfried was born as Johannes in Maxatawny, Berks Co. PA on Pt. 27, 1745. He was the first child of Joseph Siegfried and Anna Marie Romig. He married his cousin, Mary Levan, daughter of Daniel Levan and Susanna Siegfried, in 1769 and moved to Allen Twsp. Northampton o. where he purchased land in 1770 on the east bank of the Lehigh River. He own an inn and conducted a ferry service know as "Siegfried Ferry." He served in the Rev.War and there is a flag holder on grave. The memorial plaque near the grave reads as follows: "This tablet is erected by the People of Northampton to perpetuate the memory and glorious services of Col. John Siegfried and the men who served under him in the Northampton Co. Militia during the War of the Revolution, participating in the Battles of Assunpink, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Princeton, Red Bank, White Marsh and as Frontier Rangers and to commemorate the notable meeting held at Col. Siegfried's home July 29, 1779 to prevent the depreciation of continental money also in recognition of the patriotism of the people of old Northampton who made and forwarded from this place many wollen blankets and stockings for the use of the soldiers of the Revolution." He died at age 48 in 1793 leaving his wife and 7 children, five of whom were minors. He was buried in the Mennonite Cemetery which was surrounded by his land. His tombstone is unique in that the inscription is in both German and English. "Zum Ghedaehins von Johannes Siegfried weiher gestorben den 27 ten Nov. 1793. Den Alter war 48 yahr und 1 monath. In Memory of John Siegfried who departed this Life November the 27th 1793. Aged 48 years and 1 month.
