Benjamin S. Mechling, former president of the Mechling Bros. Chemical Co., Camden, N. J., and former vice president of the Union League, who died in the Cooper hospital, Camden, July 13, 1945, was born on a farm near Hosensack.

The Mechling farms of that locality were in the family since 1730, when they were obtained by grants from the Penns. They were sold publicly on May 10, 1945.

Mr. Mechling spent much of his boyhood in Germantown, and was graduated from the Germantown academy, later studying special subjects at the University of Pennsylvania. He and his late brother, Edward, assumed management of the chemical firm after the death of their father, William, and an uncle, Benjamin Franklin Mcchling, who founded the business in Philadelphia in the early 1800's and moved it to Camden early in the twentieth century.

In 1938, the firm was merged with the General Chemical Co. and became the Mechling Brothers Chemical Division of that firm. Mr. Mechling remained with the company as an official until its sale in the spring of 1945.

Mr. Mechling was elected vice president of the Union League in 1941 and was chairman of the league's finance committee. He was a member of the board of managers of the Cooper hospital, member of the Pennsylvania Society Sons of the Revolution, Colonial Wars Society of New Jersey, Philadelphia Rotary club, Riverton Country club, Highland Park dub, Florida, and Seigneury club, Canada.
