Rev. John A. Schofer, 87, 1014 1/2 W. North, died in his home yesterday. He had been ill 8 months.

He was born February 16, 1873 in Berks County, Pa. He graduated from the Mechlenberg College of Allentown, Pa. and in 1904 graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister, May 30, 1904.

Rev. Schofer has served parishes in Berlvirick, Pa., Mescopeck, Pa., Stoutsville, Baltic, Hicksville and the Lordstown Lutheran, all in Ohio. He was pastor at the Lutheran Church in Warren from 1939-1950. At that time he retired and moved to Lima.

He is a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, chaplain of the Lima Borrowed Time Club, life member of Eden Grange of Lordstown, Allen County Ministerial Assoc., and a member of the Ohio Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Kistler Schofer, whom he married August 8, 1905.

Five sons survive: John G. of Butlerville, Ind.; Major Karl S. of Springfield, who is chaplain at Wright-Patterson Air Base; Martin L. of Warren; Paul J. of Athens, who is Asst. Dean of Men at Ohio University, and Henry K. of Seoul, Korea, who is acting Superintendent of Schools for American military dependents; one daughter, Mrs. James (Anna) Bright, 1014 W. North; one brother, W. Frank of Pennsburg, Pa.; one sister, Miss Hannah Schofer of Reading, Pa.; and 12 grandchildren.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Chiles and Son Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the building fund at St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
