Captain George S., born in 1830; became the manager of the Rockland Iron Forge, and when the Civil War broke out, was one of the first to answer President Lincoln's call for men; he was mustered into service, April 23, 1861 , becoming captain of Company D, Seventh Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; he contracted sickness while in service, and after a lingering illness passed away Dec. 26, 1865; in 1854 he married Violetta Maurer and they had one son, Dr. Edwin M., who is now serving his third term in the State Senate from Berks county.
