Misc. Notes
Name spelled Burghalter

Ulrich Burkhalter was born around 1693[1], presumably in Switzerland. Perhaps he was the Ulrich Burkhalter, son of Ulrich and Katharina Burkhalter, born 29 Jan. 1692 at Hasle, Bern canton, Switzerland.[2]
Ulrich Burkhalter brought his family to America, arriving at Philidelphia on the ship Richard and Elizabeth on 28 Sept. 1733. The passenger list includes Ulrich Burghalter, age 40; Barbara Burghalter, 34; Elisabeth, 14; Anna Catharina, 12; Anna Magdalena, 8; Anna Barbara, 4; Margaretha, 2 ½; and Hance Peter, 1 ¼.[3]
Also passengers on this ship were Hans Sherer, age 30; Maria Magdalena Sherer, 22; Eva Catherina, 4; Veronica, 4 months. It has been claimed that the maiden name of Ulrich Burkhalter’s wife Barbara was Sherer.[4]
Ulrich Burkhalter “settled in Whitehall township, and on Feb. 4, 1743, bought from Richard Hockley a tract of three hundred acres of land near Egypt. This was a tract nearly square, rich and fertile soil, beautifully located, watered with two never-failing springs about two hundred fifty yards distant from each other, the water from which irrigates the meadows on this and adjoining tracts. It is in general one of the best and most desirable tracts in the township.”[5]
Ulrich Burkhalter “of Whitehall Township in the County of Northampton” made his will on 31 July 1761. In this will he states that he had given “the sum of Thirty pounds Two Cows Two Sheep one Bed & Bedstead Chest Two Acres of Wheat in the Ground and fifteen Bushels of Wheat threshed cleaned and a Spinning Wheel” to each of his daughters Mary Elisabeth, Catharine, Magdalena, Barbara, Margaretta and Dorothea. He also states that in the year 1754 he and his wife Barbara had deeded land [his entire farm] to their son Peter, “which deed is Recorded at Easton in Book A vol. 1 page 218.” Having indicated that he had already provided for his children, he left one shilling to each of his daughters and the rest of his estate to his son Peter, who he named executor.[6]

1. His age is given as 40 in the 1733 passenger list – see text.
2. Church records of Hasle, available on LDS microfilm. The names of the siblings of this Ulrich were Magdalena, Katharina, Elsi [Elizabeth], Anna, Christian, Peter, Barbara, Verena and Maria. Their births are also listed in the LDS Ancestral File. Note the similarity between these names and the names of the children of Ulrich the immigrant to Pennsylvania.
