Alter a very short illness, Alfred W. Nonnemacher, former general passenger agent of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and one of the best-liked railroad executives in the United States, died May 8, 1930, at his home at 36 South West Street, in his 83rd year.

In his prime as a railroad man, when he succeeded the late E. B. Byington as general passenger agent of the Lehigh Valley, Mr. Nonnemacher was one of the great transportation executives of America. That was the era of fast trains, when runs of one hundred miles an hour were in vogue. Mr. Nonnemacher ran them as fast as any, and once schemed a run of 102 miles an hour.

He was born in Allentown July 16, 1847, son of the late Joseph and Emma German Nonnemacher, and in his early youth entered the employ of the Lehigh, which he was to serve with such distinction. For a time he was assistant to Mr. Byingtón, then his successor, and before he retired with honors was general baggage agent.

During the early part of the century Mr. Nonnemacher and his good wife, who was Elizabeth, nee German, shone as parents of Miss Emma Nonnemacher, Allentown's leading soprano, who sang all over the country. She was the first soloist ever to sing with the Allentown Band, and after her marriage to Leonard Sefing continued her singing mostly in church and concert work.

Mr. Nonnemacher suffered great sorrow through the death of his daughter in 1908 and that of Mrs. Nonncmachcr in 1909.

His only survivor is his granddaughter, Miss Betty Abbie Sefing, a nurse, who took care of her grandfather; and there also remains his son-in-law, Mr. Sefing.

Mr. Nonnemacher was a consistent member of St. John's Lutheran Church and of the Lehigh Valley Veterans' Association.
