From youthful manhood a resident of Reading, Pennsylvania, where he read law, was admitted to the bar, and eventually became president judge of Berks County Court of Common Pleas. He was United States Commissioner to the World's Fair held in London in 1851, and while there delivered a series of addresses on the relations of Great Britain and the United States.
