Learned trade in Allentown; organist at Schoenersville, Lower Saucon, etc.; music teacher and composer; justice of the peace; county surveyor; deputy postmaster; his hymnal Die Pennsylvanische Choral Harmonie between 1844 and 1890 passed through sixteen editions; it was extensively used in Eastern section of Pennsylvania Dutch country; for imprints from his Hellertown press see author's A Check List of Imprints of the German Press of Northampton County, Pennsylvania 1766-1905; moved to Allentown about 1863; lived here short time, when he returned to Hellertown.
