John Henry Kelly Shannahan IV, 88, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Tendercare of Traverse. John was born Nov. 1,1913, at Sparrows Point, Md, the son of John H. K. and Beulah (Day) Shannahan. He attended Friends School In Baltimore and graduated from Princeton University in 1934. John also graduated from the Senior Executive Program at MIT In 1959. Following graduation from college, John was employed by electric utilities in Indiana. He met and married Mary Reynolds Kline In 1939, in Fort Wayne,Ind. and together they spent the next 23 years there. In World War II, he served In the U.S. Army as a major the 10th Armored Division, Third Army and was awarded the Bronze Star in field artillery with Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. During 41 years in the electric utility business, John was active in marketing activities as commercial manager of the Indiana & Michigan Electric Company, assistant vice president of the American Electric Power Service Corporation, assistant to the president of the Kansas Power and Light Company, vice president and executive director of the Electric Heating Association, president of the Electric Energy Association, and senior vice president of the Edison Electric Institute. He and his wife and family were summer visitors to Leelanau County for many years and upon his retirement in 1976, John and Mary Reynolds made this their permanent home. After moving here he was, for many years, a trustee of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church. a director of the Friends of the Suttons Bay Library, Leland Day Care and Nursery School, director and treasurer of the Leelanau Christian Neighbors and active In their food pantry. He was also a member of the Suttons Bay Rotary Club. John is survived by his two sons, John H. K. Shannahan V of Montgomery, Ala., and James R. Shannahan of Milwaukee, Wis., his daughter, Mrs. Jennifer S. Korner of StephenvilIe, Texas; three granddaughters, one grandson, and two great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mrs. Colegate 0. McShane of Baltimore. He was preceded In death by his wife, Mary Reynolds Shannahan in 1995; and also one granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 4 P.M. Sunday, July 7, at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Suttons Bay Congregational Church, or to the Leelanau Christian Neighbors.

Jack died July 2, 2002, after years of failing health. Since his retirement after 41 years in the electric utility business, he lived in the Leelanau County peninsula in Michigan, famed for its breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and miles of cherry orchards.
Jack was active in marketing activities at utilities in Indiana, Michigan, and Kansas, and served as president of the Electric Energy Assn. and senior vice president of the Edison Electric Institute. In Lake Leelanau he was a trustee of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church and director and treasurer of the Leelanau Christian Neighbors.
In 1939, Jack married Mary Reynolds Kline (Wellesley ’35), who died in 1995. Surviving are his two sons, John V and James; a daughter, Jennifer S. Koerner; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Colegate O. McShane. To them we offer our sincere sympathy.
