Prominent advocate of religious liberty in 1690

Captain Samuel Moore, son of the Rev. John and Margaret (Howell) Moore, was born probably at Southampton. Long Island, between the years 1643 and 1631.

Captain Samuel Moore was granted a tract of land at Newton in 1662; became a freeholder on December 4, 1666; a constable in 1675: an overseer between 1677 and 1678, also between 1681 and 1683; appointed to choose delegates to assembly in New York; commissioner of town court from 1684 to 1685, 1686, 1687, 1688 to 1690; on the committee to extend town limits in 1684; supervisor during the years 1684 to 1687, and from that year to 1691; on Dongan's Charter, in 1686, received the rank of lieutenant; was appointed delegate to the convention at New York; prominent in Leister's insurrection, and was commissioned captain of Newton militia on February 19, 1690.

4 Dec 1666, was elected Freeholder, and during the next thirty years he was constantly in the public service, holding many offices of trust and responsibility. He married Mary, daughter of Thomas Reed, who, about 1655, erected the building which served as church and residence for Rev. John Moore.
3 Oct 1662, he, with others, purchased of the Indian chiefs Womatupa, Wonoxe and Powatahuman, the tract of land on the south side of Long Island near Jamaica, known as "Plunders Neck."

19 Feb 1690. He was commissioned captain of the Newtown militia. Previous to this time he had served as Lieutenant, Gershom, his brother being the Captain. [Pioneers of Old Hopewell, page 166]

29 August 1683, listed as executor of the estate of William Osburne of Gravesend, Newtown.His will was not signed. Nathan Fish swore on 25 July 1717, Samuel was suddenly taken sick. He gave directions and asked Fish to write his will. He prepared the will, but Samuel died before the will was read to him. Will was not witnessed nor probated. The children of Captain Samuel Moore and Mary Reed were: Samuel, Joseph, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Margaret, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah, and their descendants were very numerous and widely scattered, and for the past two centuries have been among the most distinguished families in the country.
