Misc. Notes
On 2 Aug 1870, Lewis and Elizabeth boarded the shi p "City of Paris" in Liverpool, bound for America. Arriving on 29 Aug, the ship's manifest indicates they traveled steerage and the family included: Lewis, 42, a clerk; Elizabeth, 40, his wife; Thomas, 19 , a Joiner; Anna, 17, a spinster; John, 11; Joan, 9; Elizabeth, 2; an d Mary, 4 months.
Hopkin's name is missing. What a brave step this was to take in mid- life a 27 day voyage to a new land with 6 children ranging in age from 4 months to 19 years.
Soon after they arrived, the 1870 U.S. census was taken, indicating they were living in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in a house valued at $1,000 and personal property totaling $200 . Lewis was a laborer, as were Hopkin, Thomas and Anna. Baby Jane w as 10/12 years old. 1880 finds them still in the same township, and Lewis once more is a mason, Elizabeth still keeping house, and John is an "Apprentice Machine". Maybe the census taker couldn't spell "Machinist."
