Misc. Notes
Edith Smith McKee was the youngest child of James Harper and Mary Thomas McKee. She was born, grew up and married in Philadelphia. Despite her small statue she was a tomboy, and never refused a dare. In her youth she made many trips with her mother to various spas where her mother was taking the “cure" for her arthritis, and also visited friends and relatives in nearby towns. in 1882-3 she attended Miss E.E. Dana's Boarding School at Morristown, New Jersey, and her letters indicated she was very homesick. When Dr. Duncan commenced calling on the family Edith was still quite young, 16-17, and all the time she thought that he was infatuated with her sister Mary. It was a very happy day when she discovered that she was the apple of his eye.
Edith McKee Duncan stood 5'2" tall &no never weighed over 98 pounds but she was slim, rather than thin. Her hair was a very dark brown, and was so long it hung down to her ankles and surprisingly it never turned grey. She had grey eyes, a beautiful, smallish, straight nose and over-all a rather, pert face. She was a woman of great fortitude, and none of her children ever heard her complain of pain, no matter severe it must have been. She was a wonderful, devoted and unselfish wife in spite of being spoilt by her husband, many ways, for she also spoilt him.
After Dr. Duncan's death she went into deep mourning and wore a long black dress, and when going out she put on a little round black bonnet, with a small white ruching around the edge, and a long black crepe hanging down the back. Tbat was the style of dress she wore until her death, a period of over 30 years. When her grandchildren came along, she became known as 'Granny" not only to her own children and grandchildren, but to friends and neighbors of all ages, and she was adored by all who knew her. She died 3 March home, 998 prospect Avenue In Pelham Manor, and was buried beside her husband in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania..
