From the Lehigh University 50th Reunion Book:

Together with many members of our class who were in Infantry R.O.T.C., I went on active duty in June of 1943 for Basic Training at Fort McClellan, Ala. and O.C.S. at Fort Benning, Ga. As a lst Lt., I served as weapons platoon leader, rifle platoon leader, and later as battalion motor officer in the 2nd Battalion, 276 Inf. 70th Division, and saw action in the battles of the Ardennes-Vosge, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns, ending my tour of duty with the 78th Inf. Division in the occupation of Berlin. I was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantry Badge, and three battle stars.

I returned to Lehigh in the summer of 1946 and graduated in February 1947, as did many other '44's.

In 1949 1 married Monica Hefele of Catasauqua, Pa. We have two daughters, Barbara and Vicki and four sons, Newton David, Thomas, James and Peter, and fourteen wonderful grandchildren, all of whom are the pride and delight of our lives.

My entire career has been in General and Industrial Contracting, specializing in the construction of steel and cement mills, water filtration and waste treatment plants, pipeline work and the installation of Process equipment and machinery. Since retiring in 1991, 1 keep my hand in the game with an occasional consulting job.

Hobbies include historical and genealogical research, gardening, home improvement projects, oil and water color painting and participating in Lehigh Alumni activities.

Memories of Lehigh: the contrast with high school of really having to study; the influence and manner of teaching of Prof. Bill Eney of the Civil Engineering Dept. who made it all come together, beer drinking and singing at Joe Kinney's and the old Mannerchor; the spirit and fellowship of our Lehigh gang through Basic Training and O. C. S.; and the lasting friendships made on campus. in the fraternity, and in the Army.

He graduated from Catasauqua High School (1940) and then Lehigh University (Class of 44) with a B.S. in civil engineering. He followed in his fathers footsteps in a career in engineering and heavy construction, progressing from laborer and truck driver to project manager and chief engineer for A. Newton Bugbee, Inc., Newton Constructors, and Rees Weaver Construction. His education was interrupted by service in World War II when Lehighs Infantry ROTC was called to active duty in June of 1943. He graduated from Infantry OCS in July of 1943 and was assigned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 70th Infantry Division, where he served as Weapons Platoon Leader and later as Battalion Motor Officer. Throughout his life he was an active member of the Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion Post 115, and the 70th Division Association. Newt was interested in local history and served on the Board of the Lehigh County Historical Society for many years and one term as president. He played an active role in the restoration of the Troxell Steckel House and Barn, Trout Hall, and the George Taylor Home.
